Berry Protein Smoothie to Break Your Fast

Short answer: Blend 1 cup almond milk, 1 scoop protein powder, 3/4 cup frozen berries, a handful of spinach and 1 tablespoon chia seeds until smooth. That's it: five minutes and one glass.

When your window opens, the easiest first Ping is one you don't have to cook. This glass has roughly 30 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber, and it's done before the coffee cools. It's the first recipe from our 5 high-protein meals to break your fast, now with exact amounts.

Like every recipe on PingDiet, this one was developed by Michael Gonzales from standard ratios.

Picking a protein powder

Any unflavored or vanilla whey or plant protein works. Check the scoop size on your tub: they range from about 25 to 40 grams of powder. If you're comparing two, paste each label into our label checker to see what's in a serving, including any added sugar.

Make smoothie packs ahead

Portion the berries, spinach and chia into freezer bags for the week. In the morning, tip one into the blender with the milk and the scoop of protein. Frozen spinach is fine too; use about a third of a cup.

Nutrition estimate

One large glass comes out to about 270 calories, 28 g protein, 7 g fat, 27 g carbohydrate, 9 g fiber and 13 g sugar, with about 246 mg sodium. We worked that out from USDA FoodData Central values for each ingredient [1]. Brands vary, especially for protein powder, so check your labels if you track numbers closely.

Swaps and substitutions

  • Use water instead of almond milk for a lighter smoothie, or dairy milk for a creamier one with more protein.
  • Half a frozen banana makes it sweeter and thicker.
  • Ground flaxseed works in place of chia.

1 large glass

Ingredients

1 serving
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, or water
  • 1 scoop protein powder, whey or plant, about 25 g protein
  • ¾ cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 cup spinach, loosely packed
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • ½ cup ice

Method

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender first so the blades move freely.
  2. Add the protein powder, frozen berries, spinach, chia seeds and ice.
  3. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until smooth and no flecks of spinach are left. Add a splash of water if it's too thick to pour.
  4. Drink it right away, or let it sit 5 minutes if you like it thicker, since the chia keeps soaking.

Food safety and storage

  • Drink it within an hour, or keep it covered in the fridge and drink it the same day.
